How to join a live stream/live chat on the app

Who can participate in a live chat?

If a creator posts a live stream and makes it visible to all members, then all members can view the live stream and live chat, but only supporters can participate in the live chat. If the creator limits the live stream to supporters only, then free members can't watch or participate (for free members, the post will be locked and prompt them to support).

Note: For non-supporters, there may be the option to pay a fee to have one-time access to the live chat, just for that particular session. However, this option is only available if the creator has one-time live chat admissions enabled in their community.

How to find a live stream

There are a few different ways to find live streams through the Locals app:

Launch the Locals app, and select the Live tab. This will take you to a live stream newsfeed where you can browse and join all live streams that are currently broadcasting across the platform at that time (regardless of whether you're a member of them or not). This is a great way to view a live stream if you want to explore content from creators you may not be familiar with or if you are looking to join a new community.

Select the Live tab to view all live streams across the platform

Select the "My Communities" icon at the bottom of the screen (it looks like 2 people standing together) to view the aggregate newsfeed of all communities you've joined. Select the Live tab to view current or past live streams from the communities you belong to.

Select live tab

From the My Communities page, you'll see the icons of all the communities you belong to along the top. If a live stream is currently broadcasting, their icon will be highlighted and say "live". Select the community's live stream you want to view to be taken to that community's newsfeed page (which will only show their content). The live stream will be pinned near the top of their feed.

Note: you may need to scroll down a little in the feed to find the live stream, if more recent posts have been pinned and show first.

How to join a live stream/live chat

Once you've found the live stream post you want to join, tap the red "Join" button near the bottom right corner of the post.

Select Join to participate in the live stream

You will see a field near the bottom where you can type your live chat comment. Tap the airplane icon when you are ready to post your comment, and it will appear in the live chat.

To reply to another member's message in the live chat, long press on their message and you'll see a "Reply" option appear. Select reply, type your message, and send. The live chat will show the other member's message highlighted, along with your reply.

How your reply will show in chat

To close/hide the live chat, click the X on the top right corner of the live chat window, or press the top of the live chat window and drag down (you can also drag up to expand the chat and hide the live stream video).

Once live chat is hidden, you'll see a bar with icons near the bottom of the screen. Tap the heart icon to like the live stream, or the chat icon to leave a comment on the live stream post. Tap the line with an upward arrow icon to share the live stream, or tap the red highlighted chat bubbles icon to show the live chat again.

Note: if post tipping is enabled, you'll also see a purple coins icon you can select to send an tip to the tip jar on the live stream post. For instructions on how to send a highlighted tipped message in the live chat, click here.

Select the "..." to bring up a menu, where you can Bookmark the live stream, View Likes (which will show a list of all the members who have liked the stream), Report the person live streaming or to Block the person live streaming.
